Audi Confirms F1 Entry with Sauber in 2026
It’s official!
Audi is about to enter the super-fast-paced and SUPER glamorous world of Formula One for the first time in the Ingolstadt-based auto manufacturer’s history. And as mahoosive fans of all things F1, the team here at WCC Neston couldn’t be any more excited about the prospect.
That being said, we’ll have to try to keep a lid on our collective excitement. For the simple reason that the four-ringed car maker isn’t throwing its motorsport hat into the Formula 1 ring proper until 2026.
Which by our loose calculations is still four years distant.
After much frenzied speculation over recent times, it’s just been announced that Audi is pledging its future allegiance - and engineering prowess - to existing F1 team, Sauber. Which currently has a working relationship in place with engine supplier, Alfa Romeo, scheduled to run its cause by next year.
Thereafter, rumour has it that Sauber will continue facilitating Ferrari engines during the intervening years. Prior to the introduction of Audi’s highly anticipated F1 power plant.
For its part, Sauber has been competing in the pinnacle of motorsport since 1993, when it first used Mercedes' engines.
Audi’s Leap of Motorsport Faith
Meanwhile, Audi is certainly no stranger to motorsport divisions. Proving itself time and time again in various disciplines, courtesy of its proud heritage in the World Rally Championship, British Touring Cars and Le Mans.
It also created (and donated) its awesome S1 Hoonatron EV racer for legendary drift king, Ken Block to play around with of late.
So, all in all, Audi is well placed to make the transition to the actual citadel of global motorsport in a few years’ time.
And personally, we CAN'T WAIT to see what Audi turns its engineering heritage to, in terms of an F1 car. Not to mention how the newest kid on the F1 block is received amongst its closest rivals in the paddock of time-honoured champions.
For now though, all we can do is feast our eyes on these associated images, teased to afford us a tantalising glimpse of what Audi's F1 future holds from a visual perspective.
Spare a Thought for Porsche Though….
Unfortunately, the same can’t be said about VW Audi Group stablemate, Porsche. Which had also ‘talked the talk’ about entering the Formula One sphere, with a promising Red Bull collaboration supposedly on the cards.
However, that bubble burst just a few weeks ago.
According to F1 governing body, the FIA, Porsche is still committed to - and actively - pursuing interests with alternative teams, as a means of gate-crashing the ever-expanding Formula One travelling roadshow.
Being dyed-in-the-wool Audi fans - and vastly experienced technicians to boot - we’ll be keeping a very close eye on the future Audi Sauber F1 team once it's lights out on the grid.
